Here are a few must-see spots that I highly recommend for truly one of a kind adventure sessions beyond Denver:
1. Great Sand Dunes National Park
Tucked away in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America. It’s one of the few national parks where dogs are allowed in most areas (on leash), including the dunes themselves. The vast dune field creates dramatic, one-of-a-kind backdrops for your dog’s photos.
Pro tip: Temperatures can be extreme here. Plan ahead, bring plenty of water, and schedule your session for early morning or evening.
2. Crested Butte
Known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, Crested Butte shines in the summer when wildflowers blanket the meadows in vibrant color. Surrounded by the Elk Mountains, it offers endless trails and stunning alpine views, perfect for an adventurous dog photo session.
Pro tip: Visit in mid-July for peak wildflower blooms, but book early as this time of year is popular.
3. San Juan Mountains
Remote and breathtakingly beautiful, the San Juan Mountains are a photographer’s dream. From rugged peaks to endless aspen forests and high alpine lakes, this southwestern region offers unparalleled variety for adventurous photo sessions.
Pro tip: Visit in the summer for blooming wildflowers or in the fall to capture the vibrant golden aspens.

How far are you willing to travel? (Keep in mind that some of the most dramatic mountain views might require a bit of a drive.)

Is your dog comfortable around other people, kids, or dogs?
