1. Great Sand Dunes National Park

Tucked away in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America. It’s one of the few national parks where dogs are allowed in most areas (on leash), including the dunes themselves. The vast dune field creates dramatic, one-of-a-kind backdrops for your dog’s photos.

Pro tip: Temperatures can be extreme here. Plan ahead, bring plenty of water, and schedule your session for early morning or evening.

Here are a few key factors to think about:

1. Scenery

  • What kind of scenery inspires you?

  • Where do you and your dog feel most comfortable? At home? A local park? On the trail?

  • Are you new to Colorado and dreaming of that epic Rocky Mountain backdrop?

2. Season

  • Is there a certain season that really speaks to you?

  • Does your dog handle one season better than another? (For instance, avoiding hot weather with heavy-coated or brachycephalic breeds.)

  • Do you have a favorite seasonal style, like cozy sweaters or breezy summer dresses?

3. Accessibility

  • Are you up for a hike, or would you prefer a spot that’s easy to reach from the parking lot?

  • How far are you willing to travel? (Keep in mind that some of the most dramatic mountain views might require a bit of a drive.)

  • Do you or your dog have any physical concerns to consider?

4. Seclusion

  • How quiet do you want your location to be?

  • Is your dog comfortable around other people, kids, or dogs?

  • Would you be willing to meet at sunrise to give us the best chance of having the place all to ourselves?

5. Meaning

  • Is there a location that holds special meaning to you?

  • Is there a place that you and your dog visit regularly and love?
