Black Background Horse Photography

Northern Colorado Equine Photographer

Black background photos are a popular request in equine photography and are one of my absolute favorite ways to photograph horses because they’re so classic, timeless and artistic. The nature of this set up removes background distractions and really allows your horse to shine. These dramatic images are fantastic for creating show-stopping wall art for your home.

There a few different methods photographers use to create black background portraits. The method I’ve chosen to use keeps your session as stress-free and relaxed as possible for both you and your horse.

Here’s how I do it:

How to create black background horse portraits

  1. For my process, it’s all about making the most of open shade. I look for the edge of a barn aisle or an indoor arena that opens to the outside, so instead of using studio lighting (e.g. flash, soft box, etc.) I let the natural light do the work.

  2. I also try to eliminate as much extraneous light behind the horse as possible (e.g. shutting the barn door behind the horse, turning off the overhead lights, closing windows, etc.).

  3. I always spend a few minutes at the start of every session letting your horse get to know me and the sound of the camera shutter. I’ve found that most horses are able to relax quite quickly as I don’t have to desensitize them to studio equipment and the session is held in a space that’s already familiar to them.

  4. During your shoot I’ll guide you and your horse through multiple poses in order to create a variety of images that includes everything from full body images to headshots and details.

  5. Most of the magic happens after your session when I edit each image by hand in Lightroom and Photoshop to bring out your horse’s very best!
