5 Unmissable Spots for Breathtaking Dog Photos in Colorado
1. Great Sand Dunes National Park
Tucked away in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to some of the tallest sand dunes in North America. What makes it truly unique is that it’s one of the few national parks in the U.S. where dogs are allowed in most areas (on leash), including the dunes themselves.
The vast dune field offers plenty of space for exploration and fantastic opportunities to photograph your dog against the dramatic backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Pro tip: The area experiences extreme temperatures, becoming incredibly hot in summer and frigid in winter. Be mindful of the weather, and always bring plenty of water!
2. Crested Butte
Known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, Crested Butte truly shines in summer when the wildflowers are in full bloom. This area boasts numerous trails with stunning views of the Elk Mountains, alongside crystal-clear alpine lakes and flower-filled meadows. There are endless trails to explore with your dog, providing countless photo opportunities.
Pro tip: Mid-July is usually peak time for wildflowers. The town holds an annual Wildflower Festival during this time so be sure to book your accommodation early.
3. Loveland Pass
Loveland Pass is a popular, easily accessible mountain pass that runs along the Continental Divide. At over 12,000 feet (3,600 meters), it offers sweeping 360-degree views of surrounding snow-capped peaks, alpine tundra, and reflective lakes.
Pro tip: The weather changes quickly at this elevation, so be prepared for anything. It’s often windy and cold, even in summer, with snow lingering into July.
4. Boulder Flatirons
These iconic slabs of red sandstone rise dramatically from the ground near downtown Boulder, Colorado. In the summer, the meadows below the Flatirons burst with wildflowers. In the fall, the trees turn vibrant shades of gold and red, while winter transforms the landscape into a snow-covered wonderland.
Boulder’s extensive trail network winds through the Flatirons, giving you plenty of options for hikes and the perfect angles for photographing your dog.
Pro tip: Get an early start to avoid crowds and watch as the sunrise illuminates the Flatirons with the most beautiful alpenglow.
5. San Juan Mountains
Remote, rugged, and absolutely stunning, the San Juan Mountains are one of my favorite ranges to photograph in Colorado. This southwestern corner of the state features craggy peaks, otherworldly red mountains, waterfalls, deep valleys, and high alpine passes. The photo opportunities here are truly endless.
Pro tip: My favorite seasons to visit are summer—when the snow melts, trails and 4x4 roads open, and wildflowers are in bloom—and fall, when the endless aspen forests turn the hillsides gold.
