Together Forever: How to Include Your Four-Legged Family Member in Your Engagement Photos

Including your furry best friend in your engagement photography session can add a unique and personal touch to this special milestone. However, it can also present some challenges if you're not prepared. Here are some tips and tricks to help make sure your dog is an absolute star for your engagement session!

1. Plan ahead

Before your session, make sure to plan out the details of the shoot with your photographer. This way you can discuss what types of shots you're looking for and where you'd like to take them. Trust me, location can make or break a photoshoot, so it's important to choose one that's dog-friendly and perfect for your furry companion. It’s crucial to keep in mind whether the location is busy or quiet and make your selection based on your dog’s personality. Additionally, it goes without saying, be sure to check if there are any leash laws you may need to follow.

2. Grooming

It's important to make sure your dog is looking their best before the shoot. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean you need to take them to a professional groomer, but there are a few things you can do at home to make sure they're photo-ready.

Be sure to give them a good brush to make sure their coat is shiny and tangle-free. Trim their nails, so they look neat and tidy, and make sure their collar and leash are clean and in good repair. Nothing brings down the look of your photos faster than worn out and torn collars, so make sure they're in tip-top shape.

3. Practice basic cues

It's a great idea to brush up on some basic commands like sit, stay, and come before the shoot. This will make things a lot easier for your photographer and will also help to keep your dog safe and comfortable during the session.

Now, I know that not all photographers are used to working with dogs, but if you can have your dog respond to basic cues like sit, stay and come, it'll make the whole experience a lot smoother for everyone.

4. Bring treats, toys & water

When it comes to engagement photos with your dog, one of the most important things to bring along is their favorite treats and toys. Not only will these help keep your pup engaged and motivated during the shoot, but it'll also lead to some playful and fun shots. Plus, a little reward for their hard work never hurt anyone, right?

5. Consider your dog’s personality

Every dog is unique and has their own personality, and it's important to make sure that they feel comfortable and at ease during the session. If your dog is shy or nervous around strangers, it may be best to stick to a location that is familiar to them, like your backyard or a nearby park where they often play. This way they will feel more at ease and be more relaxed during the shoot.

In any case, it’s always a good bet to go with a location where you'll have plenty of space and you won't be approached by other dogs or people.

6. Be patient

Your dog may not always behave perfectly during the shoot. That's totally normal! So, my best advice is to be patient and take your time. If your dog gets restless or uncooperative, don't worry, it happens to the best of us. Just take a little break and give them some time to relax before continuing.

7. What to wear

When it comes to engagement photos, deciding what to wear can be tough. But when you add your furry friend into the mix, it becomes a whole other adventure! Don't worry though, I've got you covered with some super helpful tips on what to wear for those adorable photos with your dog.

8. Bring a helper

Having someone to help wrangle your dog during the shoot can be a huge asset. They can help to keep your dog calm and focused, as well as help to position them for the perfect shot.

9. Have fun

Remember that the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the experience! Your dog will definitely pick up on your energy, so if you're having a good time, they will too. 😊
